An Air India pilot was detained by Canadian authorities at Vancouver Airport on December 23, 2025, after being found to have consumed alcohol shortly before operating a commercial flight bound for Delhi. “The Vancouver to Delhi flight on December 23, 2025, was delayed at the last minute because a member of the cockpit crew was deplaned before the flight,” Air India said in an official statement. “Canadian authorities raised concerns about the pilot’s fitness for duty, following which the crew member was taken away for further questioning.”
Flight Operations Resume with Replacement Crew
Air India swiftly arranged for an alternate pilot to replace the detained crew member. The aircraft, equipped with multiple pilot teams to accommodate the long transpacific and transatlantic journey, departed Vancouver approximately two hours behind schedule with the replacement crew assuming command.
The flight proceeded to Vienna, where a fresh crew team took over for the final leg to Delhi, ensuring compliance with international duty time regulations for flight crews.

The detained pilot was brought back to Delhi days after the incident for questioning by the airline’s internal investigations team.
