Online Gaming Crisis: Three Sisters Dead, Bank Accounts Drained

Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh — Police Issue Urgent Warning as Gaming Addiction Epidemic Claims Lives

A tragic incident in Ghaziabad has exposed the devastating consequences of online gaming addiction, as three minor sisters from the same family jumped from the ninth floor of a residential building, sparking a major public health crisis. Preliminary investigation reports indicate that addiction to a Korean online gaming platform was the primary factor behind the tragedy. The incident has ignited widespread concern among parents and prompted authorities to launch an aggressive awareness campaign.

Tragic Loss Highlights Gaming Addiction Dangers

The three sisters, all minors, lived in Bharat City Society in Ghaziabad. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the community and raised alarm bells among law enforcement agencies across Uttar Pradesh. The Agra Police Department has launched an investigation into the tragedy and are urging parents to take immediate steps to restrict their children’s access to online gaming platforms.

DCP Aditya Singh, speaking to media representatives, stated: “The dangers posed by online gaming cannot be overstated. We strongly advise parents to keep children away from mobile phones and monitor their online activities closely. Talk to them regularly about what they are doing online. If children show excessive interest in particular games or become increasingly withdrawn, seek professional counselling immediately.”

Bank Accounts Emptied: A Pattern of Fraud

While addiction and mental health are critical concerns, online gaming platforms are also being exploited as conduits for financial fraud. Over the past year, law enforcement agencies have documented numerous cases of unauthorized transactions totalling crores of rupees, with victims ranging from children to working professionals.

Case 1: Unauthorized Reward Point Transfers

In August 2025, a Ghaziabad resident filed a cyber crime complaint reporting an unauthorized deduction of ₹2.50 lakh from his account. The victim had not shared any OTP or account credentials with anyone. Investigation revealed that the funds had been transferred to an account operated by an online gaming company under the guise of reward point purchases. Shockingly, the victim’s minor son had inadvertently provided his account login credentials through the gaming app, enabling automatic deductions for in-game rewards.

Case 2: Social Media Scam Networks

In January 2026, Umesh Singh, a resident of Hastinapur Colony, fell victim to a sophisticated fraudulent scheme. After clicking on a gaming advertisement on Facebook, Singh downloaded what appeared to be a legitimate gaming app. The application requested access to his banking credentials under the pretext of allowing him to withdraw his winnings. Within days, ₹25 lakh was siphoned from his account. Police are currently tracing the accounts used in this transaction.

Case 3: Predatory Exploitation and Blackmail

The dangers extend beyond financial loss. In December 2024, a young woman from the Sikandra area reported being sexually assaulted by a man she met through a gaming platform. The accused, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, lured her to a hotel under false pretences and attacked her. He then filmed the assault and threatened to release the video online unless she paid a ransom. Police successfully arrested and jailed the perpetrator.

Case 4: International Money Laundering

In 2022, the son of a former soldier from the Khandauli area unknowingly transferred ₹39 lakh while playing an online game. Investigation by the Range Cyber Cell traced the transaction to a Singaporean company that had received the funds through Paytm and Coda Payments gateways. The gaming company involved operates a popular platform in India. An FIR has been registered against the company.

₹10 Crore Gaming Fraud Ring Dismantled

Three days ago, police in the Sikandra area arrested four individuals in connection with a massive fraud operation involving multiple gaming apps, including Mahadev App, Anna Reddy App, and Super Hundred. These individuals served as account providers for the fraudulent platforms, withdrawing money received through gaming transactions and funnelling it to a mastermind operating from Dubai. The arrested suspects—Himanshu, Ashish, Suraj, and Ramu—were found to be coordinating their operations through a handler named Monu from Firozabad. Preliminary investigations suggest the scope of the fraud exceeds ₹10 crore.

Police Launch Awareness Campaign

Law enforcement has issued a comprehensive set of recommendations for parents and guardians to protect their children:

  • Restrict unsupervised mobile phone use, particularly for minor children
  • Monitor children’s gaming activities and discuss online interactions regularly
  • Check account statements frequently for unauthorized transactions
  • Never enter banking credentials into gaming applications
  • Counsel children if they show excessive interest in or dependence on gaming
  • Encourage outdoor activities and interaction with peers in person
  • Report suspicious activity to local cyber crime units immediately
  • Educate children about the dangers of online predators and phishing scams

A Growing Public Health Emergency

Officials emphasize that online gaming addiction, combined with the fraudulent schemes operated by bad actors, represents a significant threat to Indian families. The deaths of three young girls in Ghaziabad are not isolated incidents but rather symptoms of a larger systemic problem. Parents, educators, and community leaders are urged to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves. Mental health support, digital literacy education, and stricter regulation of gaming platforms are essential to prevent future tragedies.
