JAMMU – In a transformative shift for pilgrimage logistics in Jammu & Kashmir, the introduction of the high-speed Vande Bharat Express is set to redefine the Amarnath Yatra experience. Starting this season, devotees will be able to reach Srinagar from Jammu in just five hours—a journey that previously took upwards of ten hours by road.
The direct operation of the Vande Bharat service aims to achieve two primary goals: boosting tourism in the Kashmir Valley and drastically reducing the physical exhaustion that has long plagued pilgrims.

Ending the “Ten-Hour Ordeal”
The road journey from Jammu to Srinagar, often hampered by mountainous terrain and heavy traffic, has traditionally been a gruelling ten-hour trek. For the Amarnath Yatra, which commences on July 3rd, this meant pilgrims often arrived at their base camps already physically spent.
The new rail link effectively halves this travel time. By utilizing the 6:20 AM departure from Jammu, devotees will arrive in Srinagar by 11:10 AM. This rapid transit allows pilgrims to cover the remaining 100 kilometres to the holy cave vicinity by car or bus on the same day, potentially reaching the shrine of Baba Barfani by evening.
Expanded Capacity and Comfort
To address the heavy influx of devotees, the railway has deployed a 20-coach Vande Bharat rake. This is a significant upgrade from the 8-coach trains previously operating on shorter segments like Katra-Srinagar, where securing a seat was a common challenge.
-
Capacity: 1,440 passengers per trip.
-
Morning Service: Departs Jammu at 6:20 AM; Arrives Srinagar at 11:10 AM.
-
Afternoon Service: Departs Jammu at 1:20 PM; Arrives Srinagar at 6:00 PM (ideal for those staying overnight in Srinagar).
Relieving the “City of Temples”
Beyond the benefits to travellers, the city of Jammu stands to gain significant logistical relief. During peak pilgrimage months, Jammu often faces paralyzing traffic congestion due to thousands of vehicles ferrying pilgrims toward the Valley. By shifting a massive volume of this traffic to the tracks, urban congestion within Jammu is expected to drop sharply, improving the quality of life for local residents.

A New Chapter for Pilgrims
For the thousands of devotees heading toward the holy cave—located roughly 400 kilometres from Jammu by road—the Vande Bharat represents more than just a faster commute. It offers a “fatigue-free” start to one of the most spiritually significant and physically demanding journeys in the world.
With confirmed seating and climate-controlled coaches, the Yatra of 2026 is poised to be the most accessible and comfortable in the history of the pilgrimage.
