BANTALAB – A routine workday turned into a scene of horror in the Thathar area of Bantalab as a 15-foot-high safety wall collapsed into a ravine, burying laborers under a mountain of rubble. The catastrophic failure, which occurred in a mere 12 seconds, resulted in the tragic deaths of three workers and has raised serious questions regarding site negligence.

The Sound of Death
At approximately 3:00 PM on Saturday, the peace of the locality was shattered by a deafening roar. Eyewitnesses described the sound not as an explosion, but as a “terrifying knock of death.” In less time than it takes to cross a street, the massive concrete and stone structure disintegrated.
The laborers, toiling deep within the ravine, were caught completely off guard. While colleagues working outside the ravine spotted a section of a pillar detaching and raised a frantic alarm, their shouts were drowned out by the suddenness of the collapse. Within seconds, three vibrant lives were extinguished, buried alive beneath the weight of the debris.
PWD Report Points to Possible Negligence
Preliminary reports submitted to higher authorities by the Public Works Department (PWD) suggest the incident may have been preventable. According to PWD sources, several warning signs were present:
-
Water Seepage: Soil near the main pillar had become dangerously unstable due to persistent water seepage from the roadway.
-
Delayed Removal: The report indicates that had a previously damaged section of the bridge been removed earlier, the structural pressure on the safety wall might have been mitigated.
-
Unstable Conditions: The collapse was fuelled by heavy, wet silt that gave way with such force that a JCB excavator struggled for hours just to clear the path for rescuers.
A Harrowing Recovery
Relief and rescue operations began immediately, with the first labourer extricated by 4:00 PM. However, the search for the final victim, Rajkumar, turned into a gruelling ordeal that lasted deep into the night.
Because Rajkumar was buried at the very base of the ravine, rescue teams had to navigate immense pressure and deep silt. The operation reached a somber conclusion at 1:00 AM on Sunday when his remains were finally recovered. The recovery was particularly traumatic for those on-site; the combined weight of the debris and the impact of heavy machinery used during the excavation resulted in the dismemberment of his body..

Questions Unanswered
As the administration officially declared the rescue operation concluded, the focus now shifts to accountability. The community is left asking whether this was a freak accident of nature or a fatal lapse in safety engineering.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full technical audit of the construction site to determine why the pillar detached and why workers were permitted in the ravine despite the known soil instability and water seepage issues.
