PURANA SHALA, PUNJAB — Public outrage erupted in the Purana Shala area following a high-stakes police raid tied to an ongoing murder investigation. Farmers’ organizations and local residents mobilized en masse, surrounding a local police station to protest the alleged wrongful detention of an ex-serviceman’s daughter.
The standoff concluded only after local authorities released the young woman on the spot, though deep questions regarding procedural overreach remain.

The Catalyst: A Murder Investigation and Raid
The controversy stems from an active investigation into the July 5 murder of Rohit Singh, a resident of Bhundowal village, registered under FIR No. 0081 at the Purana Shala police station. Police identified six primary suspects, including Gursewak Singh—the son of retired soldier Malkit Singh alias Lali, residing in Chandrabhan village.
With Gursewak Singh absconding following the incident, a specialized police team led by Purana Shala Station House Officer (SHO) Kulwinder Singh and female DSP Seema Kumari executed a search and seizure operation at the suspect’s family home.
Allegations of Wrongful Detention
According to family members and local villagers, officers searched the premises for the fugitive suspect. Upon failing to locate him, the police detained his unmarried sister and removed her from the home.
-
Family Défense: Relatives maintained that the young woman has zero affiliation or connection to the murder case.
-
Community Reaction: The tactic triggered widespread condemnation, drawing heavy criticism from neighborhood residents who argued that law enforcement crossed ethical and procedural lines by targeting uninvolved family members.
Farmers Mobilize and Surround the Station
In response to the incident, members of prominent agrarian bodies, including the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and the Turban Sambal Jatta Andolan, converged on Purana Shals Chowk.
Protesters blockaded official police vehicles, halting movement and demanding the immediate release of the detainee. Speakers at the demonstration asserted that while police retain every legal right to apprehend an absconding suspect through proper channels, harassing or penalizing innocent family members is entirely unacceptable.

Resolution and Demands for Reform
Faced with mounting pressure and escalating protests, police officials released the young woman at the scene. While the immediate physical standoff dissolved, civil tension persists.
Protest leaders have formally demanded a transparent, fair internal investigation into the officers’ conduct during the raid, insisting that accountability measures be enforced to protect non-involved civilians from police harassment during active manhunts.
