Security Alert: Terror Plot Uncovered in Pathankot Ahead of New Year

Punjab Police Arrest Suspected Terrorist Aide; Intelligence Agencies Warn of Planned Infiltration

Pathankot, Punjab In a significant security development, Punjab Police have detained a suspected terrorist aide as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged plot by Pakistani-based terrorists to launch coordinated attacks in the Pathankot region during the New Year period.

The arrested individual, identified as Billu Gujjar from the Gandla Lahari area, has been detained for involvement in suspicious activities. According to intelligence inputs, another suspect, Najakat Hussain, is currently absconding and is being actively searched for by authorities.

Plot Details and Threat Assessment

Intelligence agencies have provided multiple inputs indicating that Pakistani terrorist organizations are planning to infiltrate through Pathankot and surrounding areas between December 25-31. The alleged mastermind of the conspiracy is identified as Muzaffar Ahmed, a Pakistani national who is reportedly running a terrorist network coordinating operations in the region.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Daljinder Singh, investigators have uncovered plans to target critical infrastructure, including the Pathankot Airbase, the railway station, and other important strategic locations.

“Terrorist organizations based in Pakistan are once again plotting a major attack in Pathankot,” SSP Singh stated. “Intelligence agencies indicate that some terrorists are planning to infiltrate Jammu and Kashmir and Pathankot with the assistance of local accomplices.”

Intelligence Inputs

Security agencies have issued two critical intelligence alerts. The first indicates that three terrorists were expected to infiltrate Pathankot on the night of December 17-18 with help from local facilitators Billu Gujjar and Najakat Hussain. The second report suggests that sleeper cells are currently positioned in a Dharamshala in Pathankot and are conducting reconnaissance operations in the area.

Adding to investigative challenges, the suspected terrorists have reportedly used virtual numbers for communication, making identification and tracking considerably difficult for security forces.

Enhanced Security Measures

In response to the threat assessment, security forces have significantly intensified operations across the Pathankot district. The deployment includes police, army, and special commandos conducting round-the-clock surveillance and patrols in sensitive areas including Damtal, Dhangu, Bhadroya, and Milwan.

SSP Daljinder Singh confirmed that the number of security personnel has been increased during nighttime hours, with special checking operations being conducted throughout the night. Interstate checkpoints have been established with strict protocols to screen individuals entering the city and prevent any suspicious movement.

24-hour vigilance has been enhanced at the Pathankot Airbase and other critical military installations, with additional special surveillance units deployed across the region.

Historical Context

The current security alert comes against the backdrop of previous terrorist incidents in Pathankot. Most notably, on January 1, 2016, six terrorists dressed in Indian Army uniforms breached the security perimeter of Pathankot Airbase, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to coordinated attacks and underscoring the seriousness with which authorities treat current intelligence warnings.

The timing of the alleged plot—just before New Year celebrations—mirrors the pattern of the 2016 incident, prompting heightened vigilance among security agencies.

Ongoing Investigation

Punjab Police have stated that Billu Gujjar is being interrogated regarding his involvement in the suspected terrorist network. Investigations are continuing on multiple fronts, including tracing Najakat Hussain and identifying other individuals allegedly involved in the conspiracy.

Authorities have appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals acting unusually in their areas. “Citizens’ cooperation is crucial in maintaining security and preventing any potential threat,” a police spokesman said.

Security agencies continue to monitor the situation closely as New Year approaches, with investigations ongoing and additional arrests not ruled out as the investigation progresses.
