BSF Foils Cross-Border Smuggling Attempt: Counterfeit Currency Seized Along India-Pakistan Border

AMRITSAR In a significant blow to cross-border economic destabilization efforts, the Border Security Force (BSF) has intercepted a consignment of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) smuggled from Pakistan into Indian territory. The seizure, which occurred during a routine patrol, underscores the evolving “hybrid threat” of drugs, weapons, and counterfeit currency being pushed across the international border.

The Interception

The operation was carried out by the 181st Battalion of the BSF, stationed in the high-alert Amritsar sector. According to official reports, Assistant Company Commander (ASI) Amit Lokhande of ‘B’ Company was leading a patrol team when they spotted a suspicious yellow packet discarded in a field near the border fence.

Upon inspection, security personnel recovered 445 counterfeit notes in the denomination of ₹500. The total face value of the seized currency is estimated at $₹222,500$.

Modus Operandi: The “Triple Threat” Nexus

Security agencies have noted a disturbing trend where counterfeit currency is bundled with narcotics and small arms. This “composite smuggling” strategy aims to hit two targets at once: funding local terror modules and destabilizing the Indian economy.

  • Tactics: Smugglers often use drones or “conceal and clear” methods to drop these packets for local conduits.

  • The Network: Preliminary investigations by the BSF suggest a sophisticated cross-border network involving handlers in Pakistan and “overground workers” (OGWs) on the Indian side.

  • Forensic Audit: The seized notes have been sent for high-level forensic examination to determine the quality of the paper, the precision of the security thread, and the source of the printing press.

Heightened Vigilance

Following the recovery, a formal case has been registered at the Ramdas Police Station. The BSF, in coordination with the Punjab Police and central intelligence agencies, has intensified search operations across the border belt.

“The BSF remains committed to thwarting all nefarious designs of the enemy. Whether it is drugs, drones, or fake currency, our personnel are maintaining a round-the-clock vigil to ensure national security,” stated a senior BSF official.

Authorities have urged residents in border villages to report any suspicious drone activity or unidentified packages immediately. This latest seizure serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges faced by security forces in maintaining the integrity of the border against non-traditional warfare.
