Massive Shake-up at ED Jalandhar: 13 Officers Transferred Following Raids on AAP Leaders

JALANDHAR – In an unprecedented administrative move that has sent ripples through Punjab’s political and legal circles, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has ordered a wholesale reshuffle of its Jalandhar Zonal Office. A total of 13 officers across various ranks have been transferred out of the station, a move that comes immediately after high-profile raids on senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders.

The scale of the reshuffle has caught many by surprise. Traditionally, the ED’s annual transfer procedure involves the relocation of only two or three officers per station to maintain operational continuity. By contrast, this mass exit includes several officers who had been posted to the Jalandhar unit only a few months ago.

High-Profile Targets and Timing

The timing of the transfers is being closely scrutinized. The Jalandhar unit recently executed coordinated raids on the residences and business premises of:

  • Ashok Mittal: Rajya Sabha MP and Chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU).

  • Sanjeev Arora: Punjab Minister for Industries and Commerce.

While the agency officially maintains that transfers are a routine administrative matter, the sudden removal of the core investigative team behind these raids has led to intense speculation regarding the future trajectory of these cases.

Leadership Vacuum and Delhi Oversight

The reshuffle at the junior and mid-levels follows a significant change at the top. Joint Director Ravi Tewari, the senior-most officer previously stationed in Jalandhar, was recently moved to Chennai.

His departure coincided with the issuance of summons to former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and his son, Raninder Singh, in connection with a long-standing investigation. Currently, the Jalandhar zone is being managed under the additional charge of Dinesh Puruchuri, who is overseeing operations remotely from Delhi. This has shifted the center of gravity for Punjab-based investigations directly to the ED Headquarters in the national capital.

Operational Workflow Disrupted

Sources within the agency indicate that the mass transfer has led to a temporary operational paralysis.

  • Staff Shortage: While new officers have been designated to the Jalandhar zone, their formal joining process is still underway, leaving the office understaffed.

  • Case Momentum: The exit of 13 officers—many of whom were deeply embedded in ongoing financial probes—is expected to slow the pace of investigations as the new team familiarizes themselves with voluminous case files.

Political Implications

The AAP leadership has frequently accused the central government of using the ED as a political tool. This latest reshuffle is likely to provide further ammunition for those claiming that the agency’s internal restructuring is being used to manipulate the pressure on state leadership.

As the new officers begin to take their posts, all eyes remain on the Jalandhar Zonal Office to see if the momentum of the probes into Punjab’s political elite will be maintained or if this “clean slate” signals a shift in the agency’s strategy.
