PHAGWARA – A wave of mourning has swept through the Punjab Police department following the tragic death of DSP Yogesh Kumar, who died early Wednesday morning after his service weapon discharged while he was cleaning it.

The Incident
The tragedy occurred around 7:30 AM at the officer’s official quarters, located near the Sadar Police Station in Phagwara. Reports indicate that the 55-year-old officer was engaged in the routine cleaning of his service revolver when the weapon accidentally fired.
The bullet struck him directly in the chest. Family members, who were home at the time, rushed him to Johal Hospital in Jalandhar, but doctors tragically pronounced him dead on arrival.
Officer’s Career and Recent Posting
DSP Yogesh Kumar was a respected veteran of the force. He had recently completed a significant tenure with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Punjab and had just been transferred to a new posting in Chandigarh.
Police Statement
Phagwara SP Madhvi Sharma confirmed the details of the incident to the press, citing a fatal accident during firearm maintenance.
“DSP Yogesh Kumar was cleaning his service revolver in the morning when it suddenly discharged, striking him in the chest,” SP Sharma stated. “He was taken to the hospital immediately, but doctors declared him dead.”

A Family in Mourning
The incident has left the local community and the police force in shock, particularly as the officer’s wife, parents, son, and daughter were all present in the house when the tragedy struck.
Authorities have initiated a standard inquiry into the circumstances, though preliminary reports from the scene strongly suggest a heartbreaking accident. Funeral arrangements and departmental honors are expected to be announced shortly.
