Punjab MP Raja Warring Petitions PM Modi for Nationwide Ban on ‘Lawrence of Punjab’ Web Series

CHANDIGARH – Amidst escalating tensions over the portrayal of gang culture in digital media, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President and Member of Parliament, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, has formally called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to impose an immediate ban on the upcoming web series, Lawrence of Punjab.

The series, which chronicles the life and rise of incarcerated gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, has triggered a firestorm of criticism across the state. Warring’s appeal to the Prime Minister follows a series of impassioned statements where he characterized the production as a dangerous “glorification of crime” that threatens the social fabric of Punjab.

A Threat to Peace and Youth

In a detailed letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Warring urged the Union Government to utilize its powers under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Information Technology to halt the series’ release.

“I request you to kindly issue directives to impose a ban on the release of this web series,” Warring wrote. “Such content promotes violence and criminalization within society. It not only sends a wrong message to the youth but could also pose a threat to the peace and security of Punjab.”

Warring argued that at a time when Punjab is striving to distance itself from the “gun culture” that has claimed several high-profile lives—including the late singer Sidhu Moose Wala—media houses have a moral responsibility not to romanticize “anti-heroes.”

Controversy Over the Title

Beyond the content, the title Lawrence of Punjab has touched a raw nerve. Critics and local leaders argue that associating the name of the state with a notorious criminal is an insult to Punjab’s historical identity.

The primary concerns raised by the MP include:

  • Romanticizing Gangsters: The fear that a cinematic lens will turn a violent criminal into a “folk hero” for impressionable teenagers.

  • National Security: Concerns that the series might reignite gang rivalries or inspire new criminal factions.

  • Distortion of Identity: Objections to linking Punjab’s name—traditionally associated with spiritual gurus and freedom fighters—to organized crime.

Developing Legal & Political Fronts

The MP’s letter to the PM coincides with a broader legal offensive. Sources indicate that the Punjab Police have also flagged the content to central agencies, citing potential law-and-order disruptions.

While the streaming platform has marketed the series as a “deep-dive documentary” aimed at understanding the systemic roots of crime, the Punjab Congress chief remains firm: “Crime should be punished, not premiered.”

As of now, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the I&B Ministry have yet to issue an official response. However, with the release date approaching, the standoff between creative freedom and public safety continues to intensify in the border state.
