SHAMBHU, PUNJAB — The Punjab government has unveiled ambitious plans to construct a monumental welcome gate at the Shambhu border, the primary gateway connecting the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway to the state. With a sanctioned budget of ₹12 crore, the project aims to serve as a grand aesthetic and cultural introduction to the land of five rivers.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, while detailing the project, emphasized that the structure is designed to be more than just a gateway; it is intended to be a symbol of Punjab’s storied identity, historical resilience, and architectural heritage.

A Design Rooted in Tradition
The architectural vision for the gate centres on the concept of “Panj-Aab,” representing the state’s historic five rivers. To translate this into reality, the structure will feature five distinct domes on both sides of the gateway, serving as a symbolic tribute to the rivers that define the region’s geography and history.
The design team has focused on blending modern infrastructure with traditional aesthetics, ensuring the gate integrates seamlessly with the existing national highway and service roads. Key artistic features will include:
-
Cultural Motifs: The structure will incorporate intricate patterns inspired by Phulkari, the traditional embroidery art of Punjab, alongside various other regional artistic elements.
-
Premium Materials: The project will utilize stone cladding and high-quality Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) to ensure durability while maintaining an ornate, handcrafted appearance.
-
Lattice Craftsmanship: Elegant lattice work will be a central design element, reflecting the artistic depth of Punjab’s history.

Strengthening State Identity
The government’s decision to move forward with the project follows similar initiatives in neighbouring states, such as Haryana’s prominent welcome gate on the highway near Ambala. State officials, including Cabinet Ministers Harjot Singh Bains and Tarunpreet Singh Saund, believe that the gate will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the border area but also serve as a landmark that promotes the state’s cultural identity to tourists and travellers arriving from across the country.
As the state moves toward finalizing the construction phase, the project is expected to be a major centre of attraction, offering a visual narrative of Punjab’s spirit, diversity, and creativity to every person entering the state.
Note: The project budget of ₹12 crore is approximately equivalent to $1.4 million USD.
