NRI Teacher Murdered in Amritsar: Brother and Accomplices Arrested in Property Greed Plot

AMRITSAR – A heart-wrenching case of greed and betrayal has emerged from Amritsar, where an Australian-based NRI teacher, Sunil Sharma, was brutally murdered by his own brother and accomplices over a dispute involving ancestral property.

The Amritsar Rural Police confirmed the arrests of four individuals following a 15-day intensive investigation into the disappearance of the victim.

The Sequence of Events

Sunil Sharma, a resident of Australia, had travelled to his hometown of Amritsar with the intention of overseeing renovation work on his ancestral bungalow. According to family members, he went out of contact on May 22, sparking a search that ultimately led to the uncovering of a cold-blooded murder conspiracy.

Police investigations, led by SSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal, revealed that the victim’s brother, Satish Sharma (alias Sunny), conspired with local property dealers to seize Sunil’s valuable assets in both Amritsar and Mohali.

The investigation details depict a meticulously planned crime:

  • The Lure: The accused allegedly convinced Sunil to return to Punjab under the false pretext of selling his bungalow.

  • The Act: On the day of the incident, accomplices reportedly mixed sleeping pills into the victim’s food. Once unconscious, Sunil was fatally assaulted with a baseball bat by his brother, Satish.

  • The Cover-up: After committing the murder, the accused—including Satish’s wife, Anushka Sharma, and son, Sunish Sharma—wrapped the body in a mattress and transported it in the victim’s own vehicle. They dumped the remains in a river in the Harike area and abandoned the car near Sri Darbar Sahib to divert police suspicion.

Police Action and Ongoing Hunt

Following the recovery of technical evidence, CCTV footage, and toll plaza records, the police successfully apprehended Satish Sharma, Anushka Sharma, Sunish Sharma, and property dealer Lachhman Singh (alias Balla).

“The suspects have been produced in court and are currently in police custody,” stated SSP Chahal. “We are actively conducting raids to apprehend the remaining two suspects—property dealers Manjinder Singh and Jajjbir Singh (alias Baba)—who are currently absconding.”

Currently, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other specialized agencies are scouring the Harike area to recover the victim’s remains.

The Power of Digital Advocacy

The case gained significant momentum following a desperate video appeal released by the victim’s daughter, Surbhi Sharma. In her plea to the Punjab government and law enforcement, Surbhi expressed deep suspicion regarding her uncle’s involvement, urging authorities to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation. Her advocacy proved instrumental in keeping the spotlight on the case during the crucial early stages of the probe.
