CHANDIGARH – Security agencies across Punjab and Chandigarh have been placed on high alert following a series of bomb threats targeting prominent institutions and public officials, just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the region on July 17.

The Incident
On the morning of July 13, several high-profile locations—including Yadavindra Public School (YPS), DAV Public School, Delhi Public School (DPS), and the Mohali Mayor’s office—received emails threatening Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts. The emails further contained direct threats against the Chandigarh railway station and the Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, while warning the public against attending the Prime Minister’s upcoming events.
Swift Emergency Response
Upon receiving the alerts at approximately 8:30 AM, law enforcement agencies initiated a massive, hours-long search operation. Led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans, the efforts involved specialized teams, including bomb detection and disposal squads and sniffer dog units.
“The school’s entry and exit gates were sealed immediately upon receipt of the email,” stated TPS Waraich, Director-Principal of YPS. Academic operations at the affected sites were suspended until comprehensive security clearances were granted. Following the intensive sweep, no suspicious objects or explosives were found, and all targeted locations were declared safe.
Ongoing Investigation and Security Measures
Police have launched a rigorous cyber investigation to identify the perpetrator and trace the origin of the threatening emails. While no arrests have been made, authorities are working to pinpoint the source of the communication to determine if the threats represent a credible risk or an act of orchestrated panic.
In response, the administration has significantly bolstered security protocols across Mohali, Chandigarh, and surrounding sensitive zones. These measures are designed to ensure the safety of citizens and the seamless execution of the Prime Minister’s itinerary on July 17, which includes critical infrastructure and healthcare project inaugurations.

Official Appeal
Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal has called for public cooperation, urging citizens to remain vigilant and avoid the proliferation of rumours. The administration has requested that any suspicious objects or unusual activities be reported immediately to local law enforcement.
Security remains tight as agencies continue to monitor the situation, ensuring that public safety remains the top priority in the lead-up to the Prime Minister’s visit.
