Tarn Taran By-Election: AAP Candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu Declares Assets Worth Crores

Tarn Taran: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu has declared assets worth several crores in his nomination papers for the upcoming Tarn Taran Assembly by-election. Sandhu filed his nomination on Friday in the presence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, AAP Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia, and party state president and cabinet minister Aman Arora.

According to the affidavit submitted to the Returning Officer, the AAP candidate and his wife jointly possess movable and immovable assets amounting to multiple crores, making Sandhu one of the wealthiest candidates in the fray.

Luxury Cars and Property

Harmeet Singh Sandhu’s affidavit reveals that he owns a Toyota Land Cruiser worth ₹2 crore and a Fortuner SUV valued at ₹15 lakh. He has immovable property valued at ₹1.5 crore and cash holdings of ₹70,000.

The AAP candidate also holds approximately ₹2 crore in various savings accounts. In terms of gold, he possesses 330 grams of jewelry valued at over ₹39 lakh.

Wife’s Assets and Liabilities

Sandhu’s wife has also declared gold jewelry worth ₹1.38 crore. Combined, the couple’s total movable assets stand at around ₹4.59 crore, while their immovable assets are valued at ₹1.5 crore.

However, the affidavit also lists significant debts. Harmeet Singh Sandhu has personal liabilities of ₹2.21 crore, while his wife has bank liabilities of ₹57.70 lakh.

Mann Leads Roadshow, Targets Opposition

Before the nomination filing, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led a massive roadshow in Tarn Taran to show strength for the AAP candidate. Addressing the gathering, Mann lashed out at the previous governments, accusing the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress of looting Punjab for two decades.

“Their leaders themselves don’t know which party they belong to. They’re making divisive statements, while Punjab needs schools, hospitals, and employment,” Mann said.

The Chief Minister highlighted his government’s achievements, claiming that the AAP administration has already provided 55,000 government jobs, ensured zero electricity bills for 90% of households, and is supplying adequate power to farmers.

“From 2002 to 2022, Punjab was ruled by the Akali Dal and Congress under Captain Amarinder Singh, and both looted the state. We are rebuilding Punjab with honesty and transparency,” Mann added.

Background

The Tarn Taran Assembly seat fell vacant following the resignation of the sitting MLA, triggering a by-election. The contest is expected to be a key political test for the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab, where it aims to consolidate its rural voter base ahead of the next Assembly elections.
