Punjab government takes major action: Coldrif syrup banned, decision taken after children’s deaths in Madhya Pradesh

Investigation revealed that the syrup is adulterated and harmful to health due to its high diethylene glycol content (46.28%). The syrup was manufactured by Sreesan Pharmaceuticals, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, in May 2025 and was valid until April 2027.

The Punjab government’s Food and Drugs Administration (Drugs Wing) has banned the sale, distribution, and use of Coldrif syrup with immediate effect. The department took this action following a report declaring the drug to be of non-standard quality. This report was issued by the Madhya Pradesh Drugs Testing Laboratory on October 4, 2025.

Investigation revealed that the syrup is adulterated and harmful to health due to its high diethylene glycol content (46.28%). This syrup was manufactured by Sreson Pharmaceuticals, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, in May 2025 and was declared valid until April 2027. According to the department, the drug has been linked to recent deaths of children in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, leading to its immediate ban in Punjab.

The order directs all retailers, distributors, hospitals, and medical practitioners not to buy, sell, or use this syrup. If any stock of this product is found in the state, they should report the information to drugcontrol.fda@punjab.gov.in. The order was issued by the Joint Commissioner (Drugs) of Punjab, and a copy has been sent to the Health Minister and concerned officials.
