The Punjab government is cracking down hard on dangerous dog breeds! A new policy—ready for Cabinet approval—will soon ban minors under 18 from walking Rottweilers, Pitbulls, and Terriers in public places.

This comes amid rising cases of violent dog attacks across the state. Under the proposed rules, owners of aggressive breeds will face tough restrictions, mandatory registration, and immediate action for any violations.
Key Highlights of the Draft Policy:
-
❌ No person below 18 years can take dangerous dogs out in public.
-
Dangerous breeds to be separately registered with local bodies.
-
Unregistered or stray aggressive dogs found roaming will be confiscated immediately.
-
⚖️ Heavy penalties and legal action for defaulters.
-
Pet shops must be registered — unlicensed ones face closure and prosecution.
-
Breeding of dangerous breeds likely to be banned across Punjab.
The Local Bodies Department has sought detailed data from the Animal Husbandry Department and confirmed that senior officials have already cleared the draft. Final approval now rests with the Cabinet.
️ Jagdeep Sehgal, Joint Director, Local Bodies Department, said:
“The policy has strong provisions for controlling ownership and breeding of dangerous dog breeds. Public safety is our top priority.”
Rising Pitbull Attack Cases in Punjab
Pitbulls have become a growing menace across Punjab:
-
In Ludhiana, a dhaba owner suffered 20+ stitches after a pitbull attack.
-
In Gurdaspur, an 85-year-old man was mauled to death by his pet pitbull.
-
In Jalandhar, a child was left critically injured after being bitten.

Even Chandigarh has already enforced similar bylaws banning American Pitbulls, Terriers, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentinos, and Rottweilers.
Punjab is next in line — and this time, the government means business.
