CHANDIGARH – In a comprehensive press briefing held earlier today, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed a series of critical developments ranging from the deportation of Indian nationals from Australia to a high-stakes meeting with the President of India regarding party defections.

International Legal Violations: 15 Indians Deported from Australia
Chief Minister Mann confirmed that 15 individuals are currently being deported from Australia following various legal violations. Highlighting the demographic breakdown, the CM noted that the majority of those affected are from the state of Punjab.
-
Demographics: 11 Punjabis (including one woman), 2 from Telangana, 1 from Haryana, and 1 from Uttarakhand.
-
Government Action: Mann stated that he intends to meet the deportees upon their arrival at the airport to understand the circumstances of their deportation.

Political Crisis: Presidential Meeting Set for May 5
Turning to domestic politics, the Chief Minister announced a scheduled meeting with President Droupadi Murmu on May 5. The primary objective is to discuss the recent shift of seven Rajya Sabha MPs who defected from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“The mandate of the people is sacred. We will discuss the legal and ethical implications of these defections and the possibility of a ‘recall’ for representatives who abandon the platform on which they were elected,” Mann told reporters.
Agricultural Support: Massive Water Release from Bhakra Dam
In a move to support the state’s farming community, the CM announced the release of 21,000 cusecs of water from the Bhakra Dam starting this evening.
This water is strategically timed to reach local canals across various districts between May 1 and May 3, ensuring that irrigation needs are met for the upcoming sowing season. Mann reiterated that the paddy season is slated to begin on June 1, with the state divided into four zones to ensure an uninterrupted power and water supply.
Security Update: Investigation into Railway Track Explosion
Addressing security concerns following a recent explosion on a railway track near Shambhu, the Chief Minister assured the public that the situation is being handled with “utmost priority.”
-
Collaboration: Punjab Police and state intelligence teams are in constant communication with central agencies.
-
Arrests Made: Four individuals have already been apprehended in connection with the incident.
-
Evidence: Authorities are currently analysing forensic evidence, including a SIM card recovered from the site, to trace the roots of the conspiracy.

Internal Party Matters
Clarifying rumours regarding a recent AAP meeting in Jalandhar, Mann dismissed claims of internal discord, stating the gathering was a routine session for party observers to streamline organizational goals.
