Accidental Firing at Amritsar DCP Office Leaves ASI Injured

AMRITSAR A routine weapon inspection turned into a harrowing incident on Monday morning at the Amritsar DCP (Law and Order) office, when an accidental firearm discharge left an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) injured.

The Incident

The event occurred at the ammunition branch, where a civilian had arrived to have their licensed firearm verified. According to official reports, the 30-bore pistol brought for inspection had a cartridge inadvertently left in the chamber. The weapon discharged as it was being handed over to ASI Narayan Das for examination.

The bullet struck ASI Das in the left leg, causing immediate panic at the scene. Colleagues present at the branch acted swiftly to transport him to Amandeep Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Medical Condition and Investigation

Medical professionals have confirmed that ASI Das is currently in stable condition and is not considered to be in danger.

DCP Alam Singh addressed the situation following the incident, stating, “This was a case of accidental firing. Preliminary investigations indicate there was no malicious intent or professional negligence involved.” The department has initiated a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge.

Renewed Focus on Safety Protocols

The incident has sparked a broader conversation regarding institutional safety. Sources close to the department indicate that this is not the first time a weapon has accidentally discharged during inspection procedures at the Arms Branch.

The recurrence of such incidents has prompted observers and internal staff alike to raise serious questions regarding the efficacy of current weapon-handling protocols and the security measures enforced during civilian firearm inspections. The police department is expected to review and potentially tighten these safety guidelines to prevent future occurrences.
