Amritsar Police Bust Transnational Arms and Hawala Syndicate: Afghan National Among Four Arrested

AMRITSAR – In a major blow to organized crime, the Amritsar City Police have successfully dismantled a sophisticated cross-border arms smuggling and hawala network. The operation, which culminated in the arrest of four individuals, including an Afghan national, marks a significant success in ongoing efforts to curb the flow of illegal weaponry into Punjab.

The Operation

Acting on high-grade intelligence regarding the movement of illicit consignments, police teams conducted a coordinated operation that led to the capture of the four suspects. During the search, authorities recovered a cache of lethal hardware, including eight sophisticated pistols and seven live cartridges, intended for distribution among criminal syndicates.

Modus Operandi

Preliminary investigations have unveiled a complex supply chain facilitated by international handlers. According to law enforcement:

  • Foreign Connectivity: The arrested individuals were in direct communication with a foreign-based smuggler who orchestrated the logistics of the operations.

  • Concealed Distribution: Consignments were smuggled across the border and deposited at pre-arranged “dead drop” locations.

  • Criminal Nexus: The recovered weapons were destined for criminal elements across the region, highlighting a dangerous intersection between international smuggling networks and local gang violence.

Official Statement

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that formal cases have been registered at the Islamabad and Gate Hakima police stations.

“This is not an isolated incident but part of a larger, systemic chain that we are committed to breaking,” Commissioner Bhullar stated. “We are currently mapping the entire network, from the foreign-based operators down to the final recipients. Further arrests and recoveries are imminent as the investigation deepens.”

Strategic Impact

This operation underscores the challenges faced by border state security in combating the dual threat of hawala (underground banking) and illegal arms proliferation. By intercepting these weapons before they could be integrated into the criminal ecosystem, the Amritsar Police have prevented potential violent incidents and disrupted the financial lifeline of the involved syndicates.

The investigation remains ongoing, with special task forces focused on identifying additional nodes within this transnational network.
