Punjab Vigilance Bureau Steps Up Anti-Corruption Drive: 8 Employees Arrested in May

CHANDIGARH – In a sustained effort to root out corruption within government departments, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has reported significant progress in its ongoing anti-corruption campaign. During the month of May, the Bureau successfully apprehended eight government employees red-handed while allegedly accepting bribes across six separate trap cases.

Strengthening Anti-Corruption Measures

According to a spokesperson for the State Vigilance Bureau, these operations are part of a broader, long-term initiative to eliminate malpractice and bribery within all levels of government service. The Bureau has emphasized that there is a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, and they are actively working to ensure that government offices remain transparent and accountable to the public.

Operational Statistics

The Bureau’s latest monthly performance report highlights the following key actions taken throughout May:

  • Arrests: 8 government employees were caught red-handed in 6 distinct bribery traps.

  • Legal Proceedings: The Bureau successfully presented challans related to 19 vigilance cases in various competent courts.

  • Criminal Charges: 4 criminal cases were formally registered against 14 individuals, a group that includes the 8 government employees arrested during the month.

Judicial Outcomes

In addition to the new arrests, the Bureau has seen positive results in court proceedings regarding older, pending cases. Competent courts pronounced verdicts in two major bribery cases previously investigated and pursued by the Bureau.

The outcomes of these trials resulted in the conviction of eight individuals, who were sentenced to imprisonment terms ranging from three to five years. Furthermore, the court imposed fines on the convicted parties, ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹28,000.

The Vigilance Bureau spokesperson reiterated that the department remains committed to its mission, promising continued vigilance to ensure that those who exploit their positions for personal gain face the full weight of the law.
