JALANDHAR/AMRITSAR – The spectre of terrorism has once again cast a long shadow over Punjab as two powerful explosions rocked Jalandhar and Amritsar within a three-hour window on Tuesday night. With the National Investigation Agency (NIA) now taking over the probe, the state is on a knife-edge, and political ripples are already being felt ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
A Night of Terror: The Timeline
The coordinated nature of the attacks has sent the police administration into a state of turmoil.
-
9:00 PM (Jalandhar): A delivery agent named Gurpreet arrived at the BSF Headquarters to drop off a parcel. Minutes after he stepped inside, his parked scooter was ripped apart by a massive explosion. CCTV footage captured a suspect fleeing the scene immediately after the blast.

-
11:00 PM (Amritsar): A deafening blast occurred outside the Khasa Army Camp. The explosion was so powerful that residents in the surrounding areas rushed out of their homes in panic. Security forces immediately cordoned off the region, launching a massive search operation.

The “2027 Factor”: Political Conspiracy or Terror Plot?
The timing of these attacks has ignited a fierce political debate. With the 2027 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections appearing on the horizon, security analysts and politicians are drawing a direct line between the violence and the ballot box.
Congress leader Raj Kumar Verka voiced a sentiment shared by many in the political corridors:
“This is happening because elections are approaching. I suspect a deep-seated conspiracy is being hatched to destabilize the state and rig the 2027 elections. Neither the Central nor the State government has been able to maintain the peace.”
Intelligence agencies are investigating whether the “Rocking Punjab” campaign—a term associated with efforts to destabilize the region—is a deliberate attempt by cross-border handlers to influence the political climate leading up to the polls.
The Emerging Threat: Drones and the “Nexus”
The NIA’s involvement highlights the gravity of the situation. Investigators believe these incidents are not isolated but are part of a resurgent Gangster-Terrorist Nexus.
-
Drone Smuggling: The Amritsar and Ferozepur sectors have seen a surge in drone-based deliveries of RDX and sophisticated weaponry from Pakistan.
-
The Handlers: Names like Ranjit Neeta and Lakhbir Landa have surfaced as the primary architects of these modules, operating from foreign soil to recruit local gangsters for logistical support.
-
A Pattern of Violence: This is the latest in a series of escalations, including the April 2026 Patiala-Rajpura railway track blast and the January 2026 Hoshiarpur RDX recovery.+

Security Forces on War Footing
Despite the panic, security agencies have reported significant breakthroughs. In the last year, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has busted over 400 modules. However, the move from targeting individuals to attacking military and paramilitary installations like the BSF and Army camps marks a dangerous shift in tactics.
Current Status:
-
NIA Team: On the ground in Jalandhar and Amritsar.
-
Public Safety: High alert issued across all major cities in Punjab.
-
Investigation: Focus remains on the forensic analysis of the IEDs used in the delivery scooter blast.
As Punjab navigates this sensitive phase, the shadow of the 2027 elections looms large, with the state’s peace hanging in a delicate balance between vigilant security and a persistent cross-border threat.
