Three Men Sentenced to Over 11 Years for Violent Kabaddi Tournament Brawl in Derby

Indian nationals convicted in connection with pre-planned armed clash that left spectators traumatized

Three Indian nationals have been sentenced to a combined total of over 11 years in prison following their conviction in a violent brawl that erupted at a kabaddi tournament in Derby, East Midlands, nearly two years ago.

Damanjit Singh (35), Buta Singh (35), and Rajwinder Takhar Singh (42) were found guilty of their roles in the armed clash that took place on August 20, 2023, at Alvaston, leaving multiple spectators injured and shaking the local community.

The Incident

The violence unfolded around 4 pm on that Sunday afternoon when police received multiple reports of gunfire and armed assault near Alvaston Lane. Video footage from the scene revealed the scale of the brutality, showing Buta Singh chasing members of the opposing group while Damanjit Singh and Rajwinder Takhar Singh wielded large knives during the confrontation.

The subsequent police investigation uncovered even more damning evidence. When officers stopped Buta Singh two days after the incident, they recovered two machetes from the boot of his vehicle—weapons that would prove instrumental in the prosecution’s case.

Investigation Reveals Pre-Planning

Detectives discovered that the clash was not a spontaneous act of violence but a carefully orchestrated confrontation. Investigation revealed that one group had deliberately gathered on Brunswick Street in Derby before heading to the tournament venue, indicating the violence was premeditated.

Convictions and Sentences

All three defendants initially pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, following a trial at Derby Crown Court last month, a jury found them guilty based on the compelling video evidence and weapons recovered.

Derby Crown Court handed down the following sentences:

  • Buta Singh: Four years in prison
  • Damanjit Singh: Three years and four months in prison
  • Rajwinder Takhar Singh: Three years and ten months in prison

Community Impact

The violent incident sent shockwaves through the local community and left a lasting impact on the tournament spectators who witnessed the armed clash first-hand. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings have highlighted the dangers of organized violence at public events and the serious consequences perpetrators face under UK law.

The convictions serve as a stark reminder that violent crimes—particularly those involving weapons and premeditation—are treated with the utmost severity by the courts.
