Tihar to Derabassi: Gangster Manjit Guri Remanded in ₹1 Crore IELTS Centre Extortion and Firing Case

DERABASSI — In a major breakthrough against organized extortion networks, the local police have secured the custody of notorious gangster Manjit Singh, alias Guri, in connection with a high-profile daylight firing and extortion incident at a local IELTS coaching centre.

Guri was brought to Derabassi on a transit remand from Delhi’s high-security Tihar Jail, where he has been lodged for the past one and a half years. Following his arrival under heavy security cover, the accused was produced before a local court, which remanded him to three days of police custody for intensive interrogation.

The Incident: Terror on College Road

The case dates back to a brazen daylight attack on “Education Point,” a prominent IELTS and coaching institute located on the busy College Road in Derabassi. According to police records, the owners of the center had received a threatening letter demanding a ransom of ₹1 crore. The letter explicitly bore the name of gangster Manjit Singh Guri.

Shortly after the delivery of the threat, armed youths arrived outside the institute and opened fire in broad daylight. While no casualties were reported, the gunfire triggered widespread panic among students, shopkeepers, and residents in the commercial hub.

Orchestrated from Behind Bars

Subsequent investigations by the Punjab Police revealed a sophisticated operational network operating from within prison walls. At the time of the shooting, Manjit Guri—a resident of Kheri Gujjar village—was already incarcerated in Tihar Jail, facing separate charges related to murder and violations of the Arms Act.

Digital forensics and intelligence gathering disclosed that the shooters and ground-level operatives were in constant communication with Guri. Police officials confirmed that the entire execution, from the delivery of the extortion letter to the firing, was carried out directly on Guri’s instructions from inside the jail.

A Complex Twist in the Investigation

As the police dig deeper into the extortion racket, the case has taken an intriguing turn. Investigators revealed that a separate criminal case was registered against the owners of the “Education Point” centre approximately six months ago under the Fraud and Immigration Act.

Senior officials stated that the police are currently investigating the matter from all angles to determine if there is any underlying connection between the immigration fraud case and the targeting of the centre by the extortion gang.

What’s Next: Over the next three days, police investigators aim to interrogate Guri to identify the local youth who executed the firing, locate the weapons used in the crime, and map out the financial channels used to run the extortion syndicate.
