BREAKING: Jalandhar-Based RTI Activist Simranjit Singh Shot Dead in Phagwara

PHAGWARA — In a brazen act of violence that has sent shockwaves through the region, prominent RTI activist and advocate Simranjit Singh was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Phagwara earlier today.

The Incident

According to preliminary police reports, the attack occurred when unidentified assailants arrived at the scene in a car and opened indiscriminate fire on Singh. The victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds, and despite emergency efforts, he could not be saved.

Immediately following the attack, the suspects fled the scene in the same vehicle. A rapid tactical response by local law enforcement led to the discovery of the getaway vehicle, which was found abandoned near the campus of Lovely Professional University (LPU).

Ongoing Investigation

Police officials have cordoned off the area surrounding the abandoned vehicle and are currently processing the scene for forensic evidence. Investigative teams are also actively scouring CCTV footage from the surrounding areas in a bid to identify the assailants and track their escape route.

At this time, police have not disclosed a potential motive for the murder, nor have they released the identities of any suspects.

“We are treating this as a top-priority case,” a senior police official stated. “Our teams are working on multiple leads, and we are analysing all available digital and physical evidence. We will disclose further facts as the investigation progresses.”

A History of Threats

This tragedy follows a pattern of targeted threats against the activist. Singh had previously been the subject of a high-profile assassination attempt in July 2025, when a shooter—allegedly linked to the Sonu Khatri gang—attempted to kill him outside a Jalandhar gym. The incident was thwarted at that time due to a weapon malfunction.

As the investigation unfolds, community members and activists are calling for immediate action and heightened security measures.

City E News will continue to provide live updates as more details emerge from the Phagwara police authorities.
