Political Storm Erupts in Punjab: CM Mann Accuses Centre of Using ED to Intimidate Business Community

JALANDHAR/LUDHIANA The Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) latest round of raids across Punjab has ignited a fierce political confrontation, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accusing the central government of orchestrating a campaign of intimidation against the state’s business class.

The federal agency launched operations early Tuesday morning, notably targeting the New Jawahar Nagar residence of Amit Bajaj, a prominent tax lawyer known for his expertise in Income Tax, GST, and VAT matters. The raids, which spanned locations in Jalandhar and Ludhiana, are reportedly part of a wider investigation into financial irregularities and tax evasion.

CM Mann Defends Business Community

In a strongly worded statement, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann labelled the ED’s actions as an attempt to coerce the state’s entrepreneurs into submission.

“Hindu businessmen are the backbone of Punjab’s economic development and have been instrumental in the vision of ‘Rangla Punjab’,” CM Mann stated. “The central government is misusing investigative agencies to harass our businessmen and bring them under political pressure. This is a tactic that Punjabis will not tolerate. We stand firmly with our business community.”

AAP Leadership Rallies Support

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a coordinated response to the raids. National convener Arvind Kejriwal took to the social media platform “X,” alleging that the ED is specifically targeting Hindu businessmen and small enterprises in the state to create an atmosphere of fear.

“There is no need for our businessmen to panic,” Kejriwal wrote, assuring the public that both the state and party leadership stand in solidarity with them.

Echoing these sentiments, AAP Haryana President Sushil Kumar Gupta remarked that “Punjab will take the lead in ending the ED’s political game,” signalling a potential escalation in the confrontation between state and central authorities.

BJP Hits Back

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rejected the allegations of political vendetta, asserting that investigative agencies are operating within their legal mandate.

BJP leader Anil Sarin dismissed the AAP’s claims as a distraction from the Punjab government’s own record. “The investigating agencies are working independently,” Sarin said. “The Aam Aadmi Party is crying foul while simultaneously using the Punjab Vigilance Department to pursue its own political agenda in the state.”

Broader Context

While the current raids focus on tax compliance and financial records, observers note that these actions occur against a backdrop of ongoing scrutiny involving high-profile financial cases in the state.

As the ED continues to process evidence gathered from today’s searches, the political temperature in Punjab remains high. Business associations in Jalandhar and Ludhiana are closely watching the situation, fearing that the ongoing investigation could disrupt local trade and industrial activities.
